Now that the seasons have changed and winter is in full swing, it is time to re-evaluate and adjust our beauty routines. The dry air, frigid cold, blistering wind and harsh conditions all have the potential to wreak havoc on your skin–not to mention your lips, nails and cuticles.

1. LAYERING UP
Always apply layers of clothing when venturing outside to stay warm and block the wind. This will act as a shield between you and the wintery conditions. Also, choose garments that allow for quick and easy removal before you get damp from perspiration.

As much as we love to have long, luxurious hot baths and showers as a way to warm up after a long day, keep in mind that excessive hot water can in fact dry out the skin. Therefore, try to limit the duration and temperature of these rituals. In addition to this, consume warm food and drink to keep your insides warm while nourishing the body and soul.

3. MOISTURIZING IS THE KEY
Most people experience drier skin in the wintertime. To combat this, switch to rich moisturizers for face and body and use them consistently. For best results, apply moisturizers and/or body oil to damp skin right after bathing. Pay special attention to hands and cuticles, too.

4. APPLY SUNSCREEN
Don’t be fooled by the sun. Although it may be cold out, the sun is still very much a threat to your beautiful skin. In colder weather, the skin is much more sensitive to the elements, so please protect your skin against over-exposure to the sun and other harmful effects of UV radiation.

Due to the increasing distance of the sun from the earth and our lack of direct contact with the sun during the winter, we get less vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for bone strengthening, anti-aging and other great benefits.

The simple effect of heating our homes can deplete all the moisture from the air, which can result in dry, flaky skin. Use a humidifier to counteract the dryness and keep the air in your home moist.
